In Norway, people often say “I have my residence card” as if it is the same as a residence permit. It’s not. The plastic card is proof of a decision—but your legal rights come from the permit decision and the rules attached to it.
Your residence permit is the legal permission to stay in Norway. It can include (or exclude) the right to work. The permit is granted via an official decision (UDI/police/SUA route depending on case type).
A residence card is a credit-card-sized card that proves you have been granted a residence permit. It is typically issued to people who are not EU/EEA nationals and is valid for the same period as the permit.
Your right to work depends on the type of permit you have (family immigration, skilled worker, protection, etc.). The residence card itself is not the “permission”—the permit conditions are.
Do Better Norge note: When rights depend on status, your strongest protection is clarity. Keep the decision letter, understand the permit conditions, and treat the residence card as proof—not the source—of your rights.
